... MORE TO COME ...

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan.

The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the world the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events.

Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.

The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

Here at New Light MCC we're celebrating in many ways and in many places. Our Pride Service is Sunday, June 1, here at the church. We'll also be attending and representing New Light at several Pride events in the area to promote our church and let people know we're here and growing. Our scheduled events (as of June 1) is Capital Pride, Frederick Pride, and Panhandle Pride. Volunteers are needed and donations of candy to give away are welcomed.

The Community Free Clinic of Washington County is collecting "used shoes" to be refurbished to send to countries where people have no shoes. Bruce Brooks, our lay delegate and employee representative of the Free Clinic, has put a container in our social hall to collect shoes. For each pair of shoes collected to be refurbished the Clinic also receives 40 cents as a fundraiser project for the Clinic. If you have any used shoes that need another home please bring them into the church and place in the Clinic's shoe container. Thank you.
Rosalie Jones' son, Wes Gundacker, is participating in his 9th year in the March of Dimes' GREAT CHESAPEAKE BAY SWIM, Sunday, June 8, 2014.

With the passing of his twins, Grace and Hope, he chose this event to remember them and it has become his memorial swim because it always falls on the week of their birthday, and it's a great fundraising event for the March of Dimes to raise money to help prevent birth defects. This is the 10th year anniversary of the Bay Swim.

Sponsoring Wes is easy, and of course, tax deductible if you choose to do so. You can donate cash or check to him personally or to anyone helping to collect money. You may also stop in at any Susquehanna Bank and make your donation to "Wes Gundacker's March of Dimes Bay Swim" account. Please make checks payable to GCBS.

Until next month...

Thank you New Light MCCers for the gifts and talents you bring to our church body so that we might take the message of God's love into our community, our country, and our world!

Religion is a compass, not a harness, let your heart explore.  You have the freedom to break the chains of religion that might have held you captive so you can find the YOU that God intended you to be!
